How it's made

IT STARTS WITH A PIECE OF LEATHER.

Before there are pages, cords or little details to choose from, there is simply a piece of leather.

We use vegetable-tanned leather because it was never meant to stay exactly the way you found it. It softens with use, deepens in color and slowly begins to carry the marks of wherever life takes it.

A scratch here. A darker edge there. Eventually, no two journals look quite the same.

And we like it that way.

⸻

MADE BY HAND. ONE AT A TIME.

Each journal is cut, punched, assembled and finished by hand.

No production line. No two pieces of leather behaving exactly alike. Just a process that takes a little time, a good eye and a lot of attention to the small things.

The edges, the placement of every grommet, the cord that holds everything together — every detail has its place.

⸻

THEN YOU TAKE OVER.

This is where your journal stops being ours and starts becoming yours.

You choose the leather, hardware, cord and the details that make sense to you. Add an embossing. Pick a charm. Keep it simple. Change things later.

There isn’t really a right way to make one.

That’s kind of the point.

⸻

MADE TO CHANGE.

A Studio James journal isn’t supposed to sit somewhere looking new.

Throw it in your bag. Take it on a plane. Leave it on your nightstand. Write in it at 2 a.m. Take it somewhere you’ve never been before.

The leather will soften. The pages will fill. The edges will wear.

When a notebook is full, take it out and put another one in.

The pages were never meant to last forever.
The journal was.

⸻

THE REST IS YOURS.

We can cut the leather, make the holes and put the pieces together.

But we can’t make the part that matters most.

The coffee stains. The handwriting. The plane tickets tucked between pages. The names you haven’t thought about in years. The things you were certain about and later changed your mind on.

That part takes time.

We make the beginning.
You make the rest.
